What data is never shared with us?
Location and activity data: We collect your position and activity data for example if you are walking or sitting in a vehicle. The data is collected using the smartphone sensors including, but no limited to, GNSS locator, accelerometer, and gyroscope. This data never leaves your device, is never sent to us, and is saved locally on your smartphone. The purpose of that data collection is to analyse which kind of vehicle you used during a trip. This is classified using an artificial intelligence which runs locally on your phone. The vehicle information is used to calculate your carbon emissions. Once your vehicle has been classified, we immediately delete the location and activity data.
You can, however, choose to send us this location data voluntarily through the MyCarbon Research function. You are able to turn this functionality off at any time. This data is used to improve the tracking and classification functionality.
Trip data: On your device we store locally, without ever sending it to us, a history of your trips. These include start and end dates, the distance, which vehicle was used and how much carbon was emitted. This data is used to offer you our service by giving you an overview about your emissions and how they were created.
What data do we need to collect?
Payment data: To process your payments, we need to collect the payment information. This includes your name, email, Google-Pay / Apple-Pay information, offset carbon amount, and the selected offsetting project. This data is used to fulfil the contractual obligations by processing the payment, making the payment to the offsetting project, and informing you about the offsetting project. For that reason, we need to store your data and share it with our partners. These are: “Google” (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Republic of Ireland), “Apple” (Apple Distribution International Ltd., Hollyhill Industrial Estate, Hollyhill, Cork, Republic of Ireland) and “Stripe” (Stripe Inc., 510 Townsend Street, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA). The data is stored as long as necessary or required by law using the Firebase service provided by Google. Your data can be transmitted to servers outside your country.
Server Logs: Some functionality in our app (such as payments) requires communication with a backend server. We store server logs including your IP-address. This data is used to protect our services from attackers. The data is stored for 30 days.
Anonymous Analytics: We collect anonymous app usage data. These includes different behaviour such as which buttons are clicked or how often the app was used. This data is collected through Google Analytics. We use this data to improve our application. The data is stored for 12 months.
Crash and Performance Reports: We collect anonymous crash reports and performance statistics through “Firebase Crashlytics” (Google) and “Firebase Performance Monitoring” (Google). This data is used to fix issues in our software.
How do we protect your data?
We take great care to protect your data. For that reason, all the data is sent to us encrypted and stored with high security standards using the service Firebase by our partner Google.
How can you control your data?
In accordance with the GDPR (general data protection regulation) you have the right request which data we have saved about you and request the deletion of such data. This does not extend to data which we are required to save by law.
